Raybestos Professional Grade Calipers Destroyed My Entire Brake System

The following is a letter sent to Raybestos regarding the failure of the Raybestos Professional Grade brake parts:

Brake Parts Inc.
Attn: Warranty Department

Re:      Raybestos Brake Parts Failure – Two Occurrences

Gentlemen:

The following is the history of my recent brake failures caused by defective Raybestos brake parts. I expect a prompt and generous compensation accordingly. The failures caused the cancellation of two vacation trips. I expect compensation for all replacement Raybestos parts, my labor at shop flat rates, and expense in having the rotors machined. Compensation for my time to order parts and cancelled vacations are expected.

I am a Registered Professional Engineer with 55 years of auto repair experience, so do even think about blaming these problems on me.

Vehicle:

1998 Dodge RAM 2500, 4 x 4, Cumming 24-valve diesel, automatic transmission, power brakes. VIN: 1B7KF2362WJ187442.

History:

I installed the entire front end including Timken bearings on 10/19/2010. Mileage was 198,200.

Rotors:           Raybestos Professional Grade

Pads:               Raybestos Ceramic “Quick Stop” part number PGD459QS.

Calipers:         Raybestos Professional Grade remanufactured part numbers:
397FRC10183 on the right and 397FRC10184 on the left.

1st Caliper failure occurred on August 16, 2011 on Interstate 70 in Colorado.

2nd Caliper failure occurred on October 4, 2011 on Interstate 70 in Colorado.

Problem:

Each of the two front disc brakes calipers pistons stuck on two separate occasions, overheated the rotors leaving ceramic pad deposits. Both calipers were replaced. New Raybestos pads were installed, and the rotors were machined. The work was done on 8/24/2011, 10/06/2011, and 10/07/11.

Left caliper was replaced on 8/24/2011. Raybestos Professional Grade remanufactured part number 397FRC10184. Mileage was 209, 520.

Right caliper was replaced yesterday, 10/06/2011. Raybestos Professional Grade remanufactured part number 397FRC10183. Mileage was about 211, 460.

New pads installed were Raybestos Advanced Technology Ceramic, part number 397-AT-D459C and rotors were machined.

Analysis:

The pistons in the Raybestos Professional Grade calipers seized causing the Raybestos Professional Grade Ceramic Quick Stop pads to overheat the pads and rotors. Ceramic or other materials transferred to the rotors causing the brakes to pulsate severely.

Compensation:  $500.00

Kent R. Rieske

Warranty Response from Raybestos

The following is the initial response from the warranty organization for Raybestos promising reimbursement of parts and labor.

I have looked over all of the paperwork submitted and I came up with 143.10 for parts and 211.20 for labor for a total of 354.30. Would this amount be acceptable for you? If you can let me know asap so I can get the required paperwork submitted for you. I am also sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you and hope that you will continue to use Raybestos brakes.

My Response to Raybestos Accepting Offer for Reimbursement for Parts and Labor Costs

I accepted the Raybestos warranty offer even though it did not cover any of my expenses associated with two cancelled vacations, extra time lost, extra travel expenses, and other costs.

Hi Jim,

Yes, the total of $354.30 would be acceptable.

Raybestos Ignores Their Promise for Reimbursement and Refuses to Send Promised Payment

The following is my second letter to Raybestos because their warranty department failed to send warranty reimbursement and refused to answer my emails.

Re:      Warranty Refund????? Raybestos Brake Parts Failure – Two Occurrences

Gentlemen:

I am still waiting for your warranty refund in the amount of $354.30 to arrive. Please sent it and advise me of the mailing date and method.

Your claim representative, Jim Hodges @ Affinia Group, refuses to answer my emails. The following are copies.

Your junk “Professional Grade” parts ruined two vacations that had to be canceled, caused extensive expenses and time, lots of hard work, and repair expenses. I am recording this information, and I plan to upload a detailed web page to my auto site that gets thousands of visitors each year. I suggest you respond instead of making my report worse.

NO Raybestos Warranty Reimbursement As They PROMISED!!!!
It NEVER Arrived!!!

Final Failure of Raybestos to Honor Warranty for Defective Parts

Raybestos failed to reply to my second letter after refusing to respond to my emails. They failed to provide the warranty reimbursement after promising to do so.

Conclusion

Buy Raybestos Professional Grade automobile and truck parts on the basis that "Professional Grade" parts fail and Brake Parts, Inc. (home company for Raybestos parts) will not honor the warranty. Buy Raybestos Professional Grade parts at your own risk. You have been warned.

GMC and Chevrolet Truck Owners Beware

Don't assume this is a problem exclusively to Dodge RAM 2500 and 3500 brake parts. The Raybestos Professional Grade caliper part number is exactly the same for several models and several years for GMC and Chevrolet heavy duty trucks.

Raybestos Warranty UPDATE 12/21/2011

Raybestos finally changed their minds and sent a check for the agreed amount of $354.30. Included with the check and on the back of the check was a statement, "If accepted, this accommodation releases all claims you have asserted." I cashed the check even thought I had numerous other expenses and had to cancel TWO vacations. This caused my summer to be a waste.

I wonder if this web page had anything to do with them sending the compromised settlement I reluctantly agreed to?

UPDATE - Raybestos Fails Again
Bendix Premium Ceramic Brake Pads to the Rescue

Raybestos Professional Grade Part No. ATD459C ceramic disc pads were installed on my 1998 Dodge RAM 2500 previous. The rotors were resurfaced and the Raybestos calipers were new. Even so, the brakes began to pulsate after only 14,000 miles with less than half of the pad worn away. Raybestos pads have done this before on my truck. I will never buy another Raybestos part for my car or truck.

On June 15, 2012, I removed the Raybestos disc pads and installed a new set of Bendix MKD459FM Fleet MetLok Brake Pads. I did not refinish the rotors in hopes the Bendix pads would brake smoothly. Victory, they did!!! The feel of the brakes is greatly improved after only three days. I was very pleased. Now, after 30 days, the pulsations experienced with the Raybestos pads do not occur with the Bendix pads. However, don't expect heavy pulsation to be eliminated. Find a shop that will machine the rotors on the truck. Pulling the rotors usually destroys the axle seals causing a $1200 repair bill for the seal replacement alone.

I used Bendix pads with great success on this truck years ago, and I regret ever having switched to Raybestos. I strongly recommend the Bendix MKD459FM Fleet MetLok Brake Pad Set. They are awesome!!!

AMSOIL SAE 5W-40 Premium API CJ-4 Synthetic Diesel Oil.

AMSOIL synthetic motor oil and super duty oil filters can give your car, truck, RV, motorcycle, snowmobile or boat engine the extended life, wear protection and heat protection which was originally developed for jet engines. AMSOIL synthetic motor oil and other lubricants are for those individuals who want to preserve their cars, trucks and equipment. Many automobile manufacturers require the use of synthetic motor oil in their turbocharged engines because of this additional protection.

Though AMSOIL, Inc. was founded in 1972, its story begins in the mid 1960s, when Lt. Col. A.J. "Al" Amatuzio, a jet fighter squadron commander, was impressed by the superb performance of synthetic lubricants in jet engines (in fact, only synthetics stand up to the performance demands of jet engines) and began studying their possible automotive applications. In 1972, after an intense period of research and development, Al Amatuzio introduced the first synthetic motor oil in the world to exceed API automobile service requirements.

AMSOIL synthetic motor oil provides superior protection and reduced wear while extending motor oil drain intervals to 2, 3 or 4 times the equipment manufacture's recommendations up to 25,000 miles or 1 year. Save time and money by extending the life of your vehicle by using synthetic motor oil, super duty oil filters and re-cleanable air filters.
